From best to worst lyric content and delivery in metal, according to my very particular tastes:

  1. No lyrics at all. See Darkspace, Sunn O))) Bongripper, Pelican, Russian Circles
  2. Bands with sparse, de-emphasized vocals in languages I do not speak. See Drudkh, Wędrujący Wiatr, Selvhat
  3. Bands with sparse, de-emphasized vocals in languages I do speak. See WitTR, Weakling, Agalloch
  4. Bands who play their vocal cords like an instrument, as if they were Elizabeth Frazer. See Slagmaur, Dødheimsgard, Ved Buens Ende
  5. Chanted atmospheric stuff. See Wardruna, Nest, Carnal Malefactor, Deathspell Omega, Batushka
  6. Weird beat poetry over good riffs. See Skitliv, Ulver
  7. Bolt Thrower, because I was 12 when I discovered them and they ruled
  8. literally every other genre of music’s vocals
  9. Cookie monster death metal
  10. Spanish people arguing in the street at 4am
  11. Hard rock/NWOBHM style cleans
  12. Prog opera cleans
