From best to worst lyric content and delivery in metal, according to my very particular tastes:
- No lyrics at all. See Darkspace, Sunn O))) Bongripper, Pelican, Russian Circles
- Bands with sparse, de-emphasized vocals in languages I do not speak. See Drudkh, Wędrujący Wiatr, Selvhat
- Bands with sparse, de-emphasized vocals in languages I do speak. See WitTR, Weakling, Agalloch
- Bands who play their vocal cords like an instrument, as if they were Elizabeth Frazer. See Slagmaur, Dødheimsgard, Ved Buens Ende
- Chanted atmospheric stuff. See Wardruna, Nest, Carnal Malefactor, Deathspell Omega, Batushka
- Weird beat poetry over good riffs. See Skitliv, Ulver
- Bolt Thrower, because I was 12 when I discovered them and they ruled
- literally every other genre of music’s vocals
- Cookie monster death metal
- Spanish people arguing in the street at 4am
- Hard rock/NWOBHM style cleans
- Prog opera cleans
