Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.
A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the “why” for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any “how.
Farmers don’t get days off, and neither do gardeners, homesteaders, or parents. No one else is going to cut the firewood, plant the garden or move the sheep to new pastures. The clothesline isn’t going to buzz when the clothes are dry, but the clouds might suddenly let you know that the laundry is no longer dry if you loiter inattentive inside too long.
